How it works
Child benefit (barnetrygd) is a monthly payment from NAV, the Norwegian Labour and Welfare Administration, to help cover the cost of raising children. Almost every family with children living in Norway gets it, whatever their income. This calculator shows how much you receive per month and per year, and how much is left until each child turns 18. Enter the month and year each child was born. It follows NAV's rules for ordinary child benefit, extended child benefit and the small-child supplement for single parents, shared residence, and the supplement for Finnmark and Svalbard.
Child benefit rates in 2026
Parliament sets the rates in the state budget. The 2026 rates apply from 1 February, so January was paid at the previous year's rates.
| Per month | January 2026 | From 1 Feb 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary child benefit, per child aged 0 to 18 | NOK 1,968 | NOK 2,012 |
| Extended child benefit (single parents) | NOK 2,516 | NOK 2,572 |
| Small-child supplement (child under 3) | NOK 696 | NOK 712 |
| Finnmark and Svalbard supplement, per child | NOK 500 | NOK 512 |
Ordinary child benefit is the same for every child from 0 to 18. Children under six used to get a higher rate, but since 1 September 2024 all ages get the same. For a child who receives it for all of 2026, the total is NOK 24,100: one month at NOK 1,968 and eleven at NOK 2,012.
Who qualifies if you come from abroad?
Child benefit can be paid to the child's mother or father, and also to foster parents and others who care for the child. The child must live in Norway, which means staying here for a continuous period of at least 12 months. If your whole family lives in Norway and you will stay longer than 12 months, you may qualify. This applies to foreign nationals who are registered in the National Population Register and have a residence permit or other legal residence. EEA citizens who work in Norway may qualify even if they stay for less than 12 months, and there are special rules if the child lives in another EEA country. People sent to Norway by a foreign employer, and who stay in that country's social security scheme, do not qualify. If you apply, you need to attach documents such as proof of legal residence and, for children not registered in Norway, a birth certificate. Read more on NAV's English page.
Extended child benefit and small-child supplement
If you live alone with your children you can apply for extended child benefit of NOK 2,572 a month on top of the ordinary benefit. The amount is the same with one child and with five. With shared residence it is halved to NOK 1,286. Over 2026 as a whole, extended child benefit adds up to NOK 30,808. If you have a child under 3 and receive full transitional benefit (overgangsstønad, a NAV benefit for single parents), you also get a small-child supplement of NOK 712 a month, but only one, however many small children you have.
Worked example: a single parent with two children
Anna lives alone with two children, born in April 2016 and October 2023. In September 2026 they are 10 and 2. She receives NOK 4,024 in ordinary child benefit and NOK 2,572 in extended child benefit, NOK 6,596 a month in all. Over 2026 that comes to NOK 79,008. The older child gets benefit through March 2034, another 91 months (NOK 183,092). The younger child gets it through September 2041, another 181 months (NOK 364,172). Extended child benefit lasts as long as the youngest child qualifies, and NOK 465,532 of it is left. At today's rates that leaves NOK 1,012,796 in total.
Duration, shared residence and the northern supplement
The benefit runs from the month after birth to the month before the 18th birthday, 215 months, or NOK 432,580per child at today's rate. If parents agree in writing on shared permanent residence, they can split the benefit equally. Then ordinary benefit, extended benefit and the northern supplement are halved. If you and your child live in Finnmark, on Svalbard or in one of seven municipalities in Northern Troms, you get NOK 512 extra per child each month, granted automatically from your registered address.
Other family benefits
If you are expecting a baby, see the parental leave pay calculator. To compare child benefit with what you pay in tax, use the income tax calculator. Cash-for-care benefit (kontantstøtte) for toddlers without a full nursery place is a separate benefit from NAV.
