Suggestions are plain calendar arithmetic, not official days off. Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve are treated as normal working days. Under the Holidays Act, Saturdays inside a leave period count as leave days, so a break that runs across a Saturday can cost one more day of leave than the weekdays shown. Check with your employer.

Estimate only: results are indicative and are not tax, legal or financial advice. Your actual tax and payments are set by the Norwegian authorities (the Tax Administration, NAV, Customs, the Land Registry) and depend on your personal situation. Check with them or a qualified adviser before you rely on a figure.

How it works

Norway has 12 public holidays and days treated like Sundays (helligdager and høytidsdager) in addition to ordinary Sundays. The moving ones follow Easter, so the dates change every year. This page lists the holidays for 2026 and 2027, tells you how many working days each year has, and points out squeeze days (inneklemte dager): single working days between a holiday and a weekend, where one day of leave gives you a long break. The calculator lets you look up any year.

What the law says

The Holidays and Holiday Peace Act (helligdagsfredloven), section 2, lists the public holidays: ordinary Sundays, New Year's Day, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter Sunday and Monday, Ascension Day, Whit Sunday and Monday, Christmas Day and the Second Day of Christmas. Labour Day (1 May) and Constitution Day (17 May) are not in that list. A separate 1947 act makes them days of celebration that are to be treated like Sundays, which is why they are days off in practice. The moving dates follow Easter: in 2026 Easter Sunday is Sunday, 5 April 2026, and in 2027 it is Sunday, 28 March 2027. That is early, so Ascension Day and Whitsun also come early.

Working days per year

YearWeekdaysHolidays on a weekdayWorking days
20262618253
20272616255
20282609251

How many holidays fall on weekdays varies. 2027 is a poor year, with only 6 weekday holidays, against 8 in 2026. In 2027 Whit Monday and Constitution Day are the same day (Monday 17 May), so one day off is lost. Working days here are Monday to Friday minus public holidays, with Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve counted as working days. Your own working days depend on your contract.

Worked example: Ascension and Easter 2026

Ascension Day 2026 is Thursday 14 May. Constitution Day falls on Sunday 17 May, so it gives no extra day off. One day of leave on Friday 15 May gives 4 days off in a row. At Easter, 3 days of leave before the holiday give 10 days off (Sat 28 Mar to Mon 6 Apr), and 4 days of leave after it give 11 days off. The tables show every break of up to four days of leave.

These are calendar calculations, not official days off. Holiday in Norway is counted in working days that include Saturdays, so a break that runs across a Saturday can cost one more day of leave than the tables show. Work out the exact leave days with the Norway holiday pay calculator, and check your notice dates with the notice period calculator.

Eves and other days that are not holidays

DayPublic holiday?What applies by law
Christmas Eve (24 Dec)NoWork-free from 15:00, shops close at 16:00. Employers often give the whole day.
Easter Eve and Whitsun Eve (Saturdays)NoWork-free from 15:00, shops close at 16:00.
New Year's Eve (31 Dec)NoNo special rule beyond work-free from 18:00 the day before a public holiday. Time off is up to your employer.
Day before 1 May and 17 MayNoSection 2 of the 1 and 17 May Act treats it as an ordinary working day, not as the day before a Sunday, so the 18:00 rule does not apply (unless it falls on a Saturday or the day before Ascension Day). Work that cannot be done on Sundays must stop by 22:00.

Exceptions apply where the nature of the work makes Sunday and holiday work necessary (hospitals, transport, hotels and so on), and collective agreements often give more generous terms.

If you have just moved to Norway

Expect quiet streets and closed shops on every public holiday and Sunday, and buy groceries the day before. Constitution Day on 17 May is the biggest celebration of the year, with parades and national costume (bunad). Many people take extra time off around Easter. Note that there is no statutory "bank holiday Monday" when a holiday falls on a weekend: unless your contract or collective agreement says otherwise, the day is simply lost. Pay for working on a public holiday depends on your contract or collective agreement, so if you work shifts, check what yours says.

What this calculator does not cover

It shows the national public holidays. It does not cover school holidays, local or company days off, or the pay rules in collective agreements. Whether you are paid for a holiday, or get a supplement for working on one, depends on your contract, and the calculator does not know your working pattern.

Frequently asked questions

How many public holidays are there in Norway?
Norway has 12 named days off: ten under the Holidays and Holiday Peace Act (New Year's Day, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter Sunday and Monday, Ascension Day, Whit Sunday and Monday, Christmas Day and the Second Day of Christmas) plus 1 May and 17 May, which a separate 1947 act treats like Sundays. Ordinary Sundays are public holidays too. Easter Sunday and Whit Sunday always fall on a Sunday, so they never give an extra day off.
How many working days does Norway have in 2026 and 2027?
In 2026 8 of the holidays fall on a weekday, which leaves 253 working days out of 261 weekdays. In 2027 only 6 fall on a weekday, because 1 May is a Saturday, Christmas Day and the Second Day of Christmas fall on a Saturday and Sunday, and Whit Monday and 17 May are the same day. That leaves 255 working days. There is no statutory substitute day when a holiday lands on a weekend, although some collective agreements give shift workers an extra day off, so check yours.
What is a squeeze day (inneklemt dag)?
A squeeze day is a single working day between a public holiday and the weekend, typically the Friday after Ascension Day. In 2026 one day of leave on Friday 15 May gives 4 days off in a row, from Thursday 14 May to Sunday 17 May. Squeeze days are ordinary working days by law. You need to use leave or flexitime, unless your employer or collective agreement gives the day off.
Are Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve public holidays in Norway?
No. Christmas Eve (24 December), Easter Eve, Whitsun Eve and New Year's Eve are not public holidays, so you have no general right to a full day off. But the Working Environment Act (section 10-10) says employees are to be free from work from 15:00 on Christmas Eve, Easter Eve and Whitsun Eve, and from 18:00 on the day before other Sundays and public holidays, unless the nature of the work makes it necessary. Shops must close at 16:00 on Christmas, Easter and Whitsun Eve. Many employers and collective agreements give more time off, so check your contract.
Do I get paid on public holidays in Norway?
The 1 and 17 May Act says employers must pay full wages for 1 May and 17 May when they do not fall on a Sunday or another holiday, provided you have been employed for the previous 30 days or are hired for work lasting at least 30 days. If you have to work on either day, you get the same supplement as for Sundays under your agreement, or at least 50% on top of your normal pay if nothing else is agreed. For the other holidays, pay and any supplement depend on your employment contract or collective agreement. Salaried employees normally receive their usual monthly salary.
When is Easter in 2026 and 2027, and how is it calculated?
Easter Sunday is the first Sunday after the first full moon on or after 21 March, as the Holidays Act puts it. In 2026 it falls on Sunday, 5 April 2026, and in 2027 on Sunday, 28 March 2027. Maundy Thursday is the last Thursday before Easter Sunday, Good Friday the last Friday before, and Easter Monday the first Monday after. Ascension Day is the sixth Thursday after Easter Sunday (39 days after) and Whit Sunday the seventh Sunday after (49 days after).
Are shops open on public holidays in Norway?
Mostly not. The Holidays Act requires fixed retail outlets that sell to consumers to close on public holidays, and the same rules apply on 1 and 17 May. This includes Sundays. Exceptions include kiosks and grocery shops with a sales area of up to 100 square metres, petrol stations up to 150 square metres, restaurants, and shops at airports and typical tourist locations. Shops may also open between 14:00 and 20:00 on the last three Sundays before Christmas Eve. Buy what you need the day before.
Do public holidays use up my holiday days when I take leave?
No. The Holidays Act counts holiday in working days (virkedager), which are all days except Sundays and statutory public holidays. Saturdays do count. A holiday that falls inside your leave period is therefore not deducted, but a Saturday is. If you take Monday to Friday off across Easter, the public holidays in that week do not use up your leave. The holiday pay calculator on this site shows how holiday pay is worked out.
