Monthly tables, standard table numbers (the 8000 and 9000 series) with the standard national insurance rate. The tax-free month is normally June and half withholding is normally in November or December. The 7000 series (standard deduction and special tables), the 6000 series (Finnmark and Northern Troms) and the seafarers' tables are not included.

Estimate only: results are indicative and are not tax, legal or financial advice. Your actual tax and payments are set by the Norwegian authorities (the Tax Administration, NAV, Customs, the Land Registry) and depend on your personal situation. Check with them or a qualified adviser before you rely on a figure.

How it works

In Norway your employer withholds income tax from every payslip, following the numbers on your tax deduction card (skattekort). This calculator shows how much tax is withheld each month under the table number on your card in 2026. You can see the withholding in a normal month, in the tax-free month and in December, and compare it with a percentage-based card to check whether the year's withholding covers your calculated tax. It is especially useful if you are new to Norway and the first payslip is smaller than you expected.

How to read the table number

Standard withholding tables have numbers in the 8000 and 9000 series. The number tells you how large a deduction or addition to ordinary income is built into the table, in steps of NOK 10,000:

  • 8000: no extra deduction beyond the standard deduction (minstefradrag) and the personal allowance (personfradrag).
  • 8010 to 8400: a table deduction of NOK 10,000 to NOK 400,000 (for example 8050 = NOK 50,000), which lowers withholding.
  • 9010 to 9400: a table addition of NOK 10,000 to NOK 400,000 (for example 9050 = NOK 50,000 added), which raises withholding.

The Tax Administration sets the table number from the information on your card, such as expected income, deductions, wealth and debt. The figures follow the Tax Administration's withholding routine for 2026. Other series, such as the 7000 series, the tables for Finnmark and Northern Troms, and the seafarers' tables, work differently and are not included.

How the withholding table works

The routine rounds your monthly salary down to the nearest NOK 100 and adds NOK 50. The result is multiplied by 12.12 to give an annual income. From that, a standard deduction of 40.48% (maximum NOK 84,216), the table deduction and the personal allowance are subtracted. Tax of 22% is calculated on the remainder, plus bracket tax (trinnskatt) and the national insurance contribution (trygdeavgift) on the annual income. The yearly tax is then divided by 10.5 and rounded to whole kroner.

Worked example

On a salary of NOK 50,000 a month and table 8000, the employer withholds NOK 14,184 in a normal month, nothing in June and NOK 7,092 in December. That is NOK 148,932 over the year against a calculated tax of NOK 144,183. With table 8050 the monthly withholding is NOK 13,136, and with 9050 it is NOK 15,231. Each NOK 10,000 of table deduction therefore means about NOK 210 less withheld per month.

Table-based or percentage-based withholding?

With table-based withholding, the amount rises automatically if your pay rises, and you get a tax-free month and half withholding in December. With percentage-based withholding, a fixed percentage is taken from every payment. A table card also carries a percentage rate, which is used by any other employer and for NAV benefits paid in the same period, and for extra payments such as bonuses. Either way, you are responsible for checking that the numbers on your tax deduction card are right: log in with your electronic ID to order, view or change it. Foreign employees can find help on the Tax Administration's page for foreign workers.

Frequently asked questions

What does the table number on my Norwegian tax deduction card mean?
The table number tells your employer which withholding table to use. Table 8000 has no extra deduction built in. Tables 8010 to 8400 include a table deduction of NOK 10,000 up to NOK 400,000, which lowers the monthly withholding. Tables 9010 to 9400 include a table addition of NOK 10,000 up to NOK 400,000, which raises it. The higher the number in the 8000 series, the less tax is withheld.
Why did I get a new table number?
The Norwegian Tax Administration introduced new withholding tables in 2025, so many people received a different table number from before. According to the Tax Administration, your tax will still be correct with the new number as long as the information on your tax deduction card is correct.
Why is no tax withheld in June?
The tables spread your yearly tax over 10.5 months instead of 12. No tax is withheld in one month in the summer, normally June when holiday pay is paid, and only half is withheld in November or December. That is why the other ten months have a little more tax withheld than yearly tax divided by twelve. It is a timing difference only: your total tax for the year is the same.
Should I choose table-based or percentage-based withholding?
The tax you owe is the same. Only the timing differs. The Tax Administration says table-based withholding suits you best if you have one permanent employer or payer. A percentage card suits you better if you have several employers, a mix of fixed pay and commission or bonuses, large variations in pay through the year, a short work period with a high monthly wage (for example a summer job), a mix of salary and pension, or large deductions such as debt interest.
How much difference does NOK 10,000 of table deduction make?
About NOK 210 less withheld per month at a salary of NOK 50,000. The table deduction reduces your ordinary income, which is taxed at 22%, and the tax is spread over 10.5 months: 10,000 × 22% / 10.5 = NOK 210.
What happens if I have two employers?
Only your main employer should withhold tax according to the table. Other employers, and benefits from NAV paid in the same period, should use the percentage rate on the tax deduction card. If two payers both use the table, too little tax is withheld and you may end up with tax to pay. If you are new to Norway, see the Tax Administration's page for foreign employees to check that you have a tax deduction card.
