Norway Grid Rent Calculator 2026 (Nettleie)

Work out what you pay your grid company each month: the fixed charge by capacity tier (the average of your three highest daily peaks), the energy charge per kWh, and the taxes and VAT, with Elvia's 2026 rates as an example that you replace with your own.

Last updated . Figures are for the 2026 tax year.

Your use this month

A daily peak (døgnmaks) is the hour with the highest use in a day. Find the three days with the highest peaks in the month at your grid company or in Elhub. The numbers below are examples.

Example: the SSB average of 14,964 kWh a year divided by 12.

Even use gives 48% (weekdays 06:00 to 22:00 are 80 of the week's 168 hours).

The average of your three highest daily peaks is 5.83 kWh/h. If you get the average below 5 kWh/h you move down one tier and save NOK 170 a month (NOK 2,040 a year if it applied all year).

The taxes in the energy charge are the electricity tax (7.13 øre per kWh) and the Enova levy (1 øre per kWh), plus 25% VAT. The electricity itself (spot price or Norgespris) is extra and is not included here.

Estimate only: results are indicative and are not tax, legal or financial advice. Your actual tax and payments are set by the Norwegian authorities (the Tax Administration, NAV, Customs, the Land Registry) and depend on your personal situation. Check with them or a qualified adviser before you rely on a figure.

How it works

Grid rent (nettleie) is the charge for transporting electricity from the power station to your home. It is billed by your local grid company (nettselskap), separately from the electricity you buy from your supplier, and it is the same whichever supplier or price scheme you choose. This calculator adds up a month of grid rent: the fixed charge, which depends on your capacity tier, and the energy charge per kWh, including taxes and VAT. It also shows how much you would save by moving down one tier.

The rates in the calculator are examples. Every grid company sets its own prices, so the default values are Elvia's 2026 household rates, used only to show how the calculation works. They are not your grid company's rates. Replace them with the figures from your own price list before you rely on the result.

How grid rent is built up

  • Fixed charge (fastledd): an amount per month. Norwegian rules say it must be set by how much power the customer draws, for example the highest hourly use in a day or an average of several daily peaks. This is why it is often called the capacity charge (kapasitetsledd) or power tier (effekttrinn). Households cannot be charged a separate power charge (effektledd) on top.
  • Energy charge (energiledd):a price per kWh, often lower at night and at weekends. From 1 July 2026 the income from the energy charge may be at most half of a grid company's income from each customer group.
  • Taxes: the electricity tax (elavgift) of 7.13 øre per kWh and the Enova levy of 1 øre per kWh, plus 25% VAT on the whole grid rent.

Worked example

A household uses 1,247 kWh in a month (the SSB average of 14,964 kWh a year divided by 12). The three highest daily peaks are 6.2, 5.8, 5.5 kWh/h. A peak in kWh/h is the same as the average power in kW during that hour. The average is 5.83 kWh/h, which puts the household in tier 3 (5 to 10 kW) with a fixed charge of NOK 420. Use is spread evenly over the week, so 48% falls in the daytime (weekdays 06:00 to 22:00) and 52% at night and weekends. The energy charge is NOK 481, so grid rent for the month is NOK 901, or 72.2 øre per kWh on average.

If the household keeps its three peaks under 5 kWh/h, for example by not charging the car while the water heater and washing machine are running, the fixed charge falls to NOK 250. Grid rent becomes NOK 731, which is NOK 170 less that month.

Of the daytime energy charge of NOK 0.46 per kWh (46.4 øre) at Elvia, 10.16 øre is therefore tax. Households in Finnmark and parts of northern Troms are exempt from the electricity tax, and households in Nordland, Troms and Finnmark pay no VAT on electricity.

Who is my grid company, and how do I find my peaks?

You cannot choose your grid company. Each one has a monopoly in its area, and your address decides which one serves you. Its name is on your grid rent invoice. Changing supplier does not change your grid rent. To find your peaks, log in to your grid company's customer pages or to minside.elhub.no and look at your use hour by hour. Pick the highest hour for each day, then the three highest days. Peaks usually come when several large appliances run together: the water heater, an electric car charger, the oven, a tumble dryer and electric heaters on a cold morning. If you are also choosing between a fixed and a spot electricity price, use the Norgespris calculator, and if you want to cut heating costs, see the heat pump savings calculator.

What this calculator does not cover

It does not know your grid company, so you must enter its rates. Not every grid company measures capacity the same way: some use a single peak, some the average of several daily peaks, and the day and night hours can differ. It covers grid rent only, not the electricity you buy, the supplier's mark-up or monthly fee, or any credit for Norgespris or electricity support. It does not cover business customers, one-off connection fees, or producers with solar panels who sell power back to the grid.

Frequently asked questions

How much is grid rent per month in Norway?
It depends on your grid company, your use and your peak load. Using Elvia's 2026 rates as an example, a household that uses 1,247 kWh a month, with daily peaks averaging 5.83 kWh/h, pays NOK 901 a month: NOK 420 fixed charge and NOK 481 energy charge. Other grid companies charge different amounts, so use the price list from yours.
What is grid rent (nettleie)?
Grid rent (nettleie) is what you pay the local grid company for transporting electricity to your home and for maintaining the grid. It is separate from what you pay your electricity supplier for the electricity itself. It has a fixed charge (fastledd) and an energy charge (energiledd) per kWh, and the electricity tax, the Enova levy and 25% VAT are collected through it.
What is the capacity charge on my grid rent?
The capacity charge (kapasitetsledd) is the fixed part of grid rent, set by how much power you draw at the same time. Many grid companies use the average of your three highest daily peaks in the month, where a daily peak is the single hour with the highest use in a day. The average puts you in a tier. In Elvia's 2026 price list the tiers run from NOK 150 a month for the lowest tier to NOK 755 for 15 to 20 kW.
How do I find out who my grid company is, and can I switch?
Your grid company (nettselskap) is decided by your address, and it is named on your grid rent invoice. Each grid company has a monopoly in its area, so you cannot switch it even if you are unhappy. You can switch electricity supplier freely, but doing so does not change your grid rent. The Norwegian Energy Regulatory Authority (RME, part of NVE) regulates what grid companies can charge.
How can I lower my grid rent?
Avoid drawing a lot of power in the same hour. Run the washing machine, tumble dryer and dishwasher at different times, and set the water heater and the electric car charger to run at night. With Elvia's 2026 rates, moving from the tier at 5 to 10 kW to the tier below saves NOK 170 a month. Using less electricity in the daytime also helps, because the energy charge is lower at night and at weekends.
Do Norgespris or electricity support change my grid rent?
No. Norgespris and electricity support are about the price of the electricity itself. Grid rent is charged on top, whichever you choose. The credit or charge for Norgespris and electricity support does appear on the grid rent invoice, because the grid company settles it, but it does not change the grid rent itself.
What taxes are included in grid rent?
Three things are collected through the grid rent: the electricity tax (elavgift) of 7.13 øre per kWh in 2026, the Enova levy of 1 øre per kWh, and 25% VAT on the whole invoice. Together the two levies and VAT on them come to 10.16 øre per kWh. Households in Finnmark and parts of northern Troms are exempt from the electricity tax, and households in Nordland, Troms and Finnmark pay no VAT on electricity.
