At NOK 70,000 a month converted to full time, you are at about the 36th percentile (you earn more than roughly 36 in 100 people in the group) among full-time software developers in all sectors. The placement is approximate: SSB publishes only the quartiles and the median, and the calculator draws straight lines between them.

Fixed pay only: NOK 70,000 at full time, against a median agreed monthly salary of NOK 76,000 (all sectors, without allowances and bonus).

The SSB figures are for November 2025 and come before the 2026 pay settlements. If you have had a raise since then, you will look a little better in the comparison than you would against current figures. Your effective tax rate on this pay is 28.1%. In a normal month with standard table withholding, about NOK 46,914 is paid out; in December (or November), when only half is withheld, about NOK 58,457.

Estimate only: results are indicative and are not tax, legal or financial advice. Your actual tax and payments are set by the Norwegian authorities (the Tax Administration, NAV, Customs, the Land Registry) and depend on your personal situation. Check with them or a qualified adviser before you rely on a figure.

How it works

This calculator compares a software developer's pay in Norway with the official statistics from Statistics Norway (SSB) for three occupation groups: software developers, systems analysts and architects, and other software and applications developers. Enter your fixed monthly pay and the average of any bonus per month, and you see where you fall in the pay distribution and what you take home after tax. All figures are gross monthly pay in NOK unless stated otherwise.

How SSB classifies developers

Employers report an occupation code for each employee, and SSB converts it to the four-digit Norwegian standard classification STYRK-08. Your job title has no direct role: a "full-stack developer" may be registered as a software developer, a systems analyst or an "other" developer, depending on the code your payroll department chose. In 2025 the three groups had 60,659 full-time jobs between them. STYRK-08 also has separate codes for web and multimedia developers and for application programmers, which this page does not use. If you are unsure which group fits, try all three in the calculator.

Pay level and sectors

Of the three groups, software developers had the highest median and other software and applications developers the lowest. 86% of the full-time jobs in the three groups were in the private sector, which in SSB's classification also includes publicly owned companies. For software developers there were too few jobs in central and local government for separate figures. For systems analysts and architects the median was NOK 9,780 higher in the private sector than in central government. For other software and applications developers the median was NOK 13,440 higher in the private sector than in central government. All figures are for full-time employees in November 2025. Bonuses and irregular allowances count, but paid overtime does not.

Fixed pay, bonus and what SSB counts

SSB's monthly pay is the agreed monthly salary plus irregular allowances and bonuses. Overtime is excluded, and self-employed people are not covered. For software developers the average was NOK 2,860 higher than the agreed salary alone (NOK 81,620 against NOK 78,760). Enter your fixed pay and the monthly average of your bonus in separate fields, and the calculator compares the sum with monthly pay and your fixed pay alone with the agreed salary.

Norway has no legal minimum wage for developers: the generally applicable minimum wages cover only certain industries (see the Norway minimum wage calculator). Pay in the private sector is agreed between you and your employer, or set in a collective agreement if your employer is bound by one. SSB's figures say nothing about education or experience.

Worked example

A software developer in a private company works full time with NOK 68,000 in fixed pay and on average NOK 3,000 a month in bonus. The calculator gives:

Employer and positionSoftware developer in the private sector, 100% position
Fixed pay + average bonus (actual)NOK 68,000 + NOK 3,000 = NOK 71,000 a month
Converted to full timeNOK 71,000 a month
SSB median, software developers in the private sectorNOK 78,080
Difference from the median−NOK 7,080
Placementat about the 37th percentile (you earn more than roughly 37 in 100 people in the group)
Take-home, 2026 rulesabout NOK 50,903 a month on average

A bonus paid as one lump sum affects the withholding in the month it is paid, so a payslip in that month will not match the monthly average. The final tax for the year is settled in the tax assessment.

Developer pay after tax

The table taxes the SSB monthly pay as if it were earned all year. Your employer withholds tax using a tax table, so see the Norway tax table calculator for how a normal month and December differ, and the Norway income tax calculator for how yearly tax is calculated.

SSB monthly pay for 2025 × 12, taxed under the 2026 rules with only the standard deduction and the personal allowance. Take-home per month is the yearly amount divided by 12, so it smooths out the months with no or half withholding.

If you have just moved to Norway

  • Your employer withholds tax from every payslip using your tax deduction card (skattekort). With table withholding there is normally no tax withheld in one month in the summer and half in November or December. If you have no tax deduction card you do not get that reduction.
  • Check whether your job is an employment or a contract for services. Employees are in the SSB figures. If you invoice through your own company, the tax rules are different: see the Norway sole proprietor tax calculator.
  • Bonuses, share options and other benefits can be treated differently in the tax system than base pay. This calculator taxes fixed pay and the average bonus as ordinary salary.
  • Whether you count as a tax resident affects how you are taxed: see the Norway tax residency calculator. For how holiday pay works, see the Norway holiday pay calculator, and for pension the Norway pension calculator.

For another well-paid skilled occupation for comparison, see the electrician salary calculator.

What this calculator does not cover

It does not cover freelancers or other self-employed developers, overtime, share options, pension or holiday pay, or differences by region, company size or experience, none of which SSB's table breaks down. The tax estimate uses standard deductions only for a person taxed at the ordinary rate. The SSB figures describe all full-time employees in the three occupation groups in 2025, so your own pay compared with them is a guide, not a verdict on what you should earn.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a software developer earn in Norway?
SSB spreads developers over several occupation codes. In November 2025 the median pay per month was NOK 78,000 for software developers, NOK 76,570 for systems analysts and architects and NOK 74,560 for other software and applications developers. The figures are for full-time employees, include bonuses and allowances but not overtime, and come from before the 2026 pay settlements.
What does a software developer take home after tax in Norway?
A software developer on the median pay of NOK 78,000 a month takes home about NOK 54,872 a month on average under the 2026 tax rules, using only the standard deduction and the personal allowance. That is NOK 936,000 a year before tax. The table on this page also shows take-home pay at the quartiles.
Which SSB occupation group am I in as a developer?
It depends on the occupation code your employer reports, not on your job title. The largest of the three groups by full-time jobs was systems analysts and architects (32,044), while software developers were 13% of the three groups together. Ask your payroll department which code you have, or compare with all three in the calculator.
Do developers earn more in the private sector than in government?
For systems analysts and architects the median was NOK 79,660 in the private sector and NOK 69,880 in central government, so NOK 9,780 more in the private sector. For other software and applications developers the median was NOK 76,250 in the private sector and NOK 62,810 in central government, so NOK 13,440 more in the private sector. For software developers there were too few full-time jobs in central and local government in 2025 for separate figures.
Are consultants and freelancers included in the figures?
Developers employed by consulting companies are included like any other employee. Freelancers who run their own sole proprietorship are not, because SSB's earnings statistics do not cover self-employed people. If you invoice through your own business, see the Norway sole proprietor tax calculator on this site for how tax works for the self-employed.
What does a newly graduated developer earn?
SSB's table does not split pay by education or experience, so it does not show a starting salary. The lower quartile, the level that one in four earns less than, is the nearest indication: NOK 64,060 a month for software developers, but that is not a starting salary.
How much have developers' salaries increased?
The median for software developers rose by 6.7% from 2024 to 2025, from NOK 73,070 to NOK 78,000. The table on this page shows the change for all three occupation groups.
