At NOK 58,000 a month converted to full time, you are at about the 44th percentile (you earn more than roughly 44 in 100 people in the group) among full-time teachers in all sectors. The placement is approximate: SSB publishes only the quartiles and the median, and the calculator draws straight lines between them.

Fixed pay only: NOK 58,000 at full time, against a median agreed monthly salary of NOK 58,930 (all sectors, without allowances and bonus).

Minimum pay in the KS collective agreement: 7965 Lektor (master's degree)

With 6 years of seniority the lowest annual salary is NOK 676,700 (NOK 56,392 a month at a 100% position) from 1 May 2026, the step for 6 years. Your fixed pay at full time is NOK 696,000 a year, which is NOK 19,300 above the minimum.

Next step: NOK 687,500 at 8 years of seniority.

The SSB figures are for November 2025 and come before the 2026 pay settlements. If you have had a raise since then, you will look a little better in the comparison than you would against current figures. Your effective tax rate on this pay is 25.4%. In a normal month with standard table withholding, about NOK 40,714 is paid out; in December (or November), when only half is withheld, about NOK 49,357.

Estimate only: results are indicative and are not tax, legal or financial advice. Your actual tax and payments are set by the Norwegian authorities (the Tax Administration, NAV, Customs, the Land Registry) and depend on your personal situation. Check with them or a qualified adviser before you rely on a figure.

How it works

This calculator compares a teacher's (lærer) pay in Norway with the official statistics from Statistics Norway (SSB) for primary and lower secondary school teachers, upper secondary teachers and vocational teachers, and with the guaranteed minimum pay in the municipal collective agreement. Enter your fixed monthly pay, any extras and your position size. Part-time pay is converted to a full-time equivalent, because the SSB figures are for full-time employees. All figures are gross monthly pay in NOK unless stated otherwise.

What teachers earn in Norway

SSB measures monthly pay in November each year. Monthly pay means the agreed salary plus irregular allowances and bonuses, without overtime. In 2025 the median for primary and lower secondary teachers was NOK 59,010, up 3.5% on the year before. The median for upper secondary teachers was NOK 62,140 and for all occupations NOK 57,970. About 63,671 full-time jobs stand behind the primary school figure, so it is a good picture of what teachers actually earn. SSB groups people by the job they do, not by their degree, so a lektor with a master's degree who teaches lower secondary school may well be counted as a primary and lower secondary teacher. Newly qualified teachers and experienced ones sit in the same group, which is why the spread inside it is wide.

How pay is set: the KS agreement

Teachers in municipal schools are covered by a collective agreement (tariffavtale) between the municipalities' employers' organisation KS and the unions. The central agreement is the Main Collective Agreement (Hovedtariffavtalen, HTA), which runs for 2026 to 2028 with an interim settlement in 2027. It guarantees a minimum annual salary for each position code and number of years of seniority, and the employer then negotiates pay locally, so most teachers earn more than the minimum. Oslo municipality has its own agreement and private schools follow other agreements, so the table below applies to the KS area only.

Minimum pay for teachers in the municipalities from 1 May 2026

Which minimum applies depends on your position code, which follows your education. To be placed in one of these codes you need completed subject and teacher education, and a practical pedagogical education (PPU) counts as at least 30 credits. The five codes for teaching staff are:

Code and titleEducation required
7961 Teacher (3-year qualification)Approved subject and teacher education of 3 years (180 credits)
7962 Adjunkt (4-year qualification)Approved subject and teacher education of 4 years (240 credits)
7963 Adjunkt with further education (5-year)Approved subject and teacher education of at least 5 years (300 credits)
7965 Lektor (master's degree)Approved subject and teacher education plus an approved master's degree or equivalent, at least 5 years (300 credits)
7966 Lektor with further education (6-year)As lektor, and at least 6 years of approved higher education in total (360 credits)

The teacher education for primary and lower secondary school is a five-year programme leading to a master's degree and the title lektor, in two tracks: grades 1 to 7 and grades 5 to 10. There is also a route through a practical pedagogical education (PPU) after another degree. If you take further education that lifts you above the requirements of your code, you can move up to a higher code, which is often the quickest way to a higher minimum.

Worked example

An adjunkt with further education (code 7963) works in a municipal school with 10 years of seniority, in a 80% position, with NOK 46,000 in fixed pay a month. The calculator gives:

Teacher pay after tax

The table taxes the SSB monthly pay as if it were earned all year. Your employer withholds tax from each payslip using a tax table, so see the Norway tax table calculator for how a normal month, the summer month and December differ, and the Norway income tax calculator for how yearly tax is calculated.

If you have just moved to Norway

  • Titles mislead. In Norwegian schools lektor is a teacher with a master's degree, not a university lecturer, and adjunkt is a teacher with four years of approved education. Ask your employer which position code you have been given, because that decides your guaranteed minimum.
  • Ask what seniority (lønnsansiennitet) you were credited with when you were hired. Relevant earlier work counts, and the amount is often stated in the employment contract.
  • Your employer withholds tax from every payslip using your tax deduction card (skattekort). With table withholding there is normally no tax withheld in one month in the summer and half in November or December. If you have no tax deduction card you do not get that reduction.
  • Pay in private schools and in Oslo follows other agreements. For how holiday pay works, see the Norway holiday pay calculator, and for pension the Norway pension calculator.

Nurses also work under the KS agreement in the municipalities: see the nurse salary calculator.

What this calculator does not cover

It does not cover Oslo municipality, private schools or universities, and it does not calculate overtime, extra duties or local pay negotiations. It cannot tell which position code or seniority your employer should give you. It does not include pension or holiday pay, and the tax estimate uses standard deductions only for a person taxed at the ordinary rate. The SSB figures describe all full-time teachers in 2025, so your own pay compared with them is a guide, not a verdict on what you should earn.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a teacher earn in Norway?
The median pay of full-time primary and lower secondary school teachers (grunnskolelærere) was NOK 59,010 a month in November 2025, according to Statistics Norway (SSB), and the average was NOK 58,710. Half of the teachers earned between NOK 55,110 and NOK 63,020. For comparison, the median for all occupations was NOK 57,970. These are gross monthly figures from before the 2026 pay settlements.
What is the starting salary for a newly qualified teacher?
SSB does not split pay by seniority, so there is no official starting-salary figure. What exists is the guaranteed minimum in the municipal collective agreement (KS): from 1 May 2026 the lowest annual salary with 0 to 5 years of seniority is NOK 655,800 for a lektor with a master's degree and NOK 586,400 for an adjunkt with four years of education, which is NOK 54,650 and NOK 48,867 a month. The employer can pay more but not less.
What is the difference between lærer, adjunkt and lektor?
They are position codes in the pay agreement, decided by how many credits of approved subject and teacher education you have: 3 years for lærer, 4 for adjunkt, 5 for adjunkt with further education, and a master's degree for lektor. Without seniority the minimum pay rises from NOK 545,400 for a lærer to NOK 655,800 for a lektor, NOK 110,400 more a year. Note that in Norwegian schools lektor does not mean a university lecturer: the five-year teacher education for primary and lower secondary school leads to the title lektor.
How much does teacher pay rise with seniority?
The guaranteed minimum rises in steps at 6, 8, 10 and 16 years of pay seniority. For a lektor it goes from NOK 655,800 to NOK 797,500 at 16 years. Between the steps the minimum stays flat, so any other increase comes from local negotiations and the general increases in the annual pay settlement.
Do teachers in private schools earn less than in municipal schools?
In 2025 the median for primary and lower secondary teachers was NOK 59,100 in local government (the municipal schools) and NOK 56,830 in the private sector, so private-school teachers were NOK 2,270 behind. Private schools have their own agreements, so the KS minimum does not apply to them.
How much does a teacher take home after tax?
A teacher on the median pay of NOK 59,010 a month takes home about NOK 43,967 a month on average under the 2026 tax rules, using only the standard deduction and the personal allowance. In a normal month your employer withholds a bit more than that average, because no tax is withheld in one month in the summer and half in November or December.
